It’s summer and time to head to the beach, lake or the mountains. Before you leave, stop by the Friends of the Library bookstore and stock up on some great reading material.

The Friends will hold a “Colossal Book Sale” from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 6 in front of the library. Books are 25 cents and romance novels are 10 cents. Book collections are a little more.
If you can’t make it on Aug. 6, the bookstore is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.
If you want to help out and be part of an organization that supports the library with funding for many of the extras the county does not provide, join the Friends of the Library. The Friends organization was formed in 1965 with the help of the Fountain Valley Woman’s Club. The official bookstore came into being with the opening of the library in 1991. The group has donated well over $1 million to the library.
In addition to running the bookstore, the Friends host interesting programs throughout the year. Membership forms are available at the bookstore.
If you love books and are looking for something to do, the Friends of the Library are looking for you. They need volunteers to work in the bookstore, helping customers and cashing them out when they are ready to purchase their selections. They also need sorters who go through the book donations and organize them into genres before shelving. You do need to be a member of the Friends of the Library to volunteer.
If you can’t commit to a schedule, you can volunteer to be on the substitute list for the bookstore or help out on a big sale day. They can always use extra muscle on sale dates, moving boxes of books and getting them displayed for the sale.
If interested in joining the Friends and/or volunteering, contact Jill Smith, the bookstore manager, at (714) 968-5334 or Cheryl Nguyen, president of the Friends of the Library, at (714) 531-5838.
