Memorial Day ceremony is May 27

Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9557 will hold its annual Memorial Day observance at 10 a.m. Monday, May 27 at Veterans Park next to the library, 17635 Los Alamos St.

The ceremony will feature addresses by members of the VFW as well as city dignitaries.

Additionally, Girl Scout Malia Cortez from Troop 458 will work with the city and VFW to earn her Gold Award. She is creating memorial displays that will include a mini flag with an attached note card, which family and friends can dedicate to a loved one who has passed. They will be placed in the ground for the day but will be removed by sunset.

Malia is also creating a Memorial Day booklet with pertinent information for Fountain Valley middle school students. The booklets will cover such topics as the difference between Memorial Day and Veterans Day, the significance of the Gold Star program, and other related information.

Starbucks will provide coffee and refreshments for attendees.

The Fountain Valley Community Foundation will also announce new details of its Honored Heroes Veterans Banner Program.
